Keeping Kids Safe – Poison Safety Tips

Here’s some information on keeping kids safe from poisons, medication and other things that are usually available in the home.

Know which household products are poisonous. Keep them out of the reach of children. To avoid confusion, keep them in their original containers.
Keep the National Poison Control Center hotline number by each phone: 1-800-222-1222.
Don’t mix different cleaning products together.
Don’t leave medicine in your purse or an unlocked kitchen or bathroom cabinet. Don’t put it on kitchen or bedside table.
Never refer to medicine or vitamins as candy.
Choose medicines and products that have child-resistant caps.
Keep make-up, hair spray, cologne and other personal products away from children.
Install carbon monoxide detectors in the home.
Throw away old medicines and cleaning products.

plant

One item that’s not talked about too much when it comes to poison, is the potential poisonous plants that you may have around your home. When my daughter was a toddler, she attempted to eat one of our household plants. I immediately called Poison Control. Since I couldn’t identify what kind of plant she ate, I ended up taking her to the emergency room. Luckily, nothing was wrong. This taught me a great lesson – switch to fake plants! No, not really, but I did move my household plants up high and became educated on what kind of plants they were and if they were poisonous.
